    Gaza: Respiratory infections are spreading in overcrowded camps, doctors warn

    Doctors have reported outbreaks of respiratory infections such as covid-19 and flu, as conditions worsen further for the population in Gaza.

    The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that more than half (58%) of all recorded illnesses in Gaza in the week 3-9 August were acute respiratory infections. Particularly affected were children and people with chronic conditions, with crowded shelters driving transmission.

    Gaza’s health ministry has said that a total of 64 231 people have been killed and more than 161 000 injured since October 2023, though true numbers are likely to be higher, with many still trapped under rubble.
