Designs for Health debuts “industry-first” probiotic for gut lining support

Supplement brand Designs for Health has launched Anaerostipes Probiotic, an “industry-first” probiotic featuring Anaerostipes caccae CLB101, to tackle the root causes of digestion issues in the gut lining.

The strain converts unwanted lactate into the short-chain fatty acid butyrate, addressing the challenge when bacteria ferment undigested carbohydrates into D-lactate, which the human body metabolizes poorly.

Butyrate fuels the cell lining between the gut and bloodstream, made up of cells called colonocytes, to support gut barrier integrity and helps to improve immune function.

Through its mechanism, the new probiotic strain claims to help strengthen the gut lining, support healthy digestion, and promote overall gut balance.

“Anaerostipes is not just another probiotic, it’s a leap forward in gut health innovation,” says Dr. David Brady, chief medical officer at Designs for Health.

“By reintroducing a keystone organism like A. caccae CLB101, we’re able to influence the entire microbial environment in a way that supports barrier function, immune regulation, and metabolic signaling, the core pillars of long-term GI health.”

    Crossfeeding other beneficial gut microbes

    A. caccae live in the low-oxygen environment of the colon and can be negatively impacted by certain bowel conditions and other metabolic disorders, highlights Designs for Health.

    A. caccae CLB101 also plays a role in cultivating a healthy microbial ecosystem by cross-feeding other beneficial gut microbes and promoting microbial diversity, which are essential factors for long-term gastrointestinal resilience.

The probiotic is delivered in a once-daily capsule designed for clinical reliability and convenience.

“The launch of Anaerostipes reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing the science of nutrition and delivering real solutions that address the root causes of health challenges,” says Amardeep Kahlon, CEO at Designs for Health.

“As a brand built on clinical integrity and innovation, we strive to equip practitioners with cutting-edge tools that improve patient outcomes and redefine what’s possible in functional medicine.”

    US GRAS status

    A. caccae CLB101 was granted self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status in the US last July. The designation follows rigorous review of safety data, including genomic characterization, multiple toxicology studies, and a demonstrated manufacturing process with stringent quality control.

Ritu Shah, CEO of supplier ClostraBio, adds: “With its focus on innovative, science-backed ingredients and leadership role in the functional medicine space, Designs for Health was the obvious partner to commercialize the first dietary supplement containing our next-generation A. caccae CLB101 ingredient.

“Designs for Health has the team and the experience required to educate both health-care practitioners and consumers on the important role of both CLB101 and butyrate in gut health.”

In other probiotic news, Kerry consolidated research supporting the importance of breast milk probiotics for early life immunity and growth, as well as maternal wellness. The company spotlighted its LC40 Infant (Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716), which is the first probiotic strain of its kind clinically validated for both infant and maternal applications.
