The number of requests for an online consultation submitted to general practices in England rose by almost 50% in the past year, official figures show.
Data released by NHS England on 30 October show that 6 532 742 online consultation requests were submitted to practices in September 2025, a 49.9% rise from the 4 386 520 requests in September 2024.
The data cover various forms of online communication, including booking a GP appointment and medication requests.1
Overall, practices received 108.7 submissions per 1000 registered patients in September 2025, the data show. However, the rate of patient uptake varies widely across the country. One practice received 891.6 online submissions per 1000 patients, while others had just 0.1 online submissions per 1000.
