Apart from Friday and Saturday nights, I cook every meal from breakfast to dinner. Because of that, I’m constantly relying on my kitchen gadgets. When I heard that my black plastic spatulas and other plastic-based tools were possibly increasing my risk for ingesting microplastics, I was glad I had some non-toxic kitchen utensils on deck.

    • Studies have shown that plastic kitchen gear, especially black plastic, can leach microplastics into your food.
    • Earlywood’s wooden spatula replaces multiple tools—it flips, stirs, scrapes, and serves.
    • I’ve reached for it daily for the past two years, easily grabbing it for upwards of 500 dinners if my calculations are correct.

I already heavily relied on my incredible Earlywood spatulas, but I covet them even more today because of their natural wooden material. The spatula’s ingenious design is the main reason it stands out. When I first bought this tool, I wasn’t sure how useful the flat, sharp design would be. I was sorely wrong—it’s the entire reason this wooden spatula is so functional. It is long, regardless of whether you grab the 10-inch or 13-inch option, which allows me to safely and comfortably use it to cook in shallow skillets or deep pots without my hands getting hot.

Because the spatula has this thin paddle-like design, it can perform multiple tasks. It moves and sautés vegetables easily. The wide, hard edges make scraping fond off the bottom of the pan easy, plus I can flip ingredients like tofu or burgers without any fuss. It’s more useful to me than a standard spatula because its durable material gives me better control. It’s also angled at the bottom for easier scraping. The blade is nice and thin, allowing the spatula to shimmy under the ingredients, and wide enough to handle most stovetop tasks. It stirs well, which is excellent for making sauces, cooking grains and more. There’s not much it can’t do.

Another perk of these spatulas is using the long side to scrape ingredients into a bowl or pan. When you own more than one, like I do, they work wonderfully as salad tongs or serving spoons.

I’m still using the spatulas I purchased years ago—they just need a little wood oil every so often to stay in shape. My collection has grown because I love them so much, and I love that cleaning them takes minimal effort.

It feels good to know these wooden utensils are safe to use in any pan, and I’m confident they won’t cause damage. I also love that I never have to think about them leaching plastic. Plus, everything is handmade in Montana.

I couldn’t go a day without these spatulas, and neither should you. They will last you for years, even with constant use—I am a testament to that. Pick up the Earlywood spatula while you can because they sell out often.
