    • Podiatrists recommend the Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX as the best hiking shoe.
    • It offers a supportive midsole, strong traction and toe caps for tough, uneven terrain.
    • For the best fit, try on shoes later in the day, match the shoe to the terrain and look for traction and stability.

Ever tried climbing a steep trail only to feel your feet slip right out from under you? It’s not just scary—it can be downright dangerous on uneven ground. Hiking requires traction, support and stability to navigate rocks, roots and tricky terrain. That’s why wearing the right shoes can make all the difference when exploring new trails and reaching breathtaking views.

So, what’s the best shoe for hiking? We asked podiatrists for their top recommendation, and both experts agreed on the same pair.

Why Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX Is the Best Shoe for Hiking

The Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX is a top pick among podiatrists for its balance of support, protection and comfort.

“These lightweight hiking shoes offer SensiFit superior ankle support, sturdy All-Terrain Contagrip outsoles for uneven terrain, and OrthoLite plush cushioning to reduce joint strain on descents,” says Miguel Cunha, D.P.M., a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon.

Suzanne Fuchs, D.P.M., also a board-certified podiatrist, adds that the X Ultra 4 Mid GTX stands out for its supportive midsole and excellent traction—features that help reduce joint stress, especially on downhill treks, while also reducing risk of slips or falls.

For long hikes, the shoe’s snug yet comfortable fit prevents blisters and pressure points. It also includes protective details like reinforced toe caps to protect against roots and rocks, and certain models even include a rock plate for added underfoot protection, adds Fuchs.

Finally, both podiatrists praise its waterproof Gore-Tex lining, which helps to keep feet dry and supported in all kinds of weather conditions.

Recently, Salomon released a new edition of this shoe, the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX, which is another great option.

What to Look For When Buying Shoes for Hiking

Podiatrists recommend several tips to keep in mind when shopping for hiking shoes:

    • Fit-Test Late in the Day. Make sure your shoes fit properly by trying them on later in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen and more fatigued, as this will reflect how they’ll feel during a hike, says Cunha.
    • Match the Shoe to the Terrain. For day hikes, opt for low, lightweight shoes. For heavy packs or rough terrain, choose stiffer, higher boots, recommends Fuchs. In wet conditions, waterproof shoes are best, while in dry or warm weather, breathable options will make you feel more comfortable.
    • Look for a Deep Lug Pattern on the Sole. Soles with deep treads help provide maximum traction to ensure you don’t slip even on uneven terrain.
    • Shock Absorption and Heel Stability. Shoes with good shock absorption and a ridge heel collar will keep your feet stable and comfy even on long hikes.

    Our Expert Take

When it comes to hiking, proper footwear is essential for handling creeks, mud, rocky gravel and steep trails. The Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX is supportive, sturdy and grippy—making it a great choice for tackling a wide range of terrain.

Podiatrists recommend shopping for hiking shoes later in the day to account for foot swelling, matching the shoe to the terrain you plan on conquering, and looking for features like solid traction, shock absorption and heel stability. With the right pair of hiking shoes, you’ll feel confident and supported to explore new trails and reach new heights.

At the time of publishing, the price started at $147.
