The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded its recall of ground cinnamon. This is due to elevated lead levels found in popular brands.
Test results have shown a concerning amount of lead in ground and powdered cinnamon, leading to recalls. The most recent products that have been recalled due to excessive lead content are Jiva Organics organic cinnamon powder, Super Brand dried cinnamon powder and Asli cinnamon powder, among others.
These are the brands and products on the FDA’s most recent list of cinnamon recommended for recall:
- Jiva Organics organic cinnamon powder sold at Taj Supermarket with a best-by date of July 2025
- Super Brand dried cinnamon powder sold at Asian Supermarket in Little Rock, Arkansas
- Asli cinnamon powder sold at A&Y Global Market in Columbia, Missouri
- El Chilar canela molida sold at El Torito Market
- Marcum ground cinnamon sold at Save-A-Lot Food Stores with a best-by date of December 5, 2025
- SWAD cinnamon powder sold at Patel Brothers with a best-by date of October 2026
- Supreme Tradition ground cinnamon sold at Dollar Tree with a best-by date of October 6, 2025
- Compania Indillor Orientale (CIO) ground cinnamon sold at Eurogrocery
- ALB Flavor cinnamon powder sold at Eurogrocery with a best-by date of August 3, 2025
- Shahzada cinnamon sold in New York
- Spice Class ground cinnamon sold in New York with a best-by date of December 2026
- La Frontera canela molida sold in New York
Though some of these products may have past best-by dates, the FDA encourages consumers to check their cabinets, as spices have a long shelf life and may linger in your kitchen even past their expiration dates.
While there are no illnesses connected to these recent recalls, chronic lead exposure can have dangerous effects on the body. High levels of lead can be especially harmful for young children and can cause permanent damage to their nervous system, leading to developmental defects, learning disorders and other health problems. Signs of chronic lead exposure in adults can include kidney dysfunction, neurocognitive issues and hypertension.
