I was hiking in Colorado recently when a woman ran past me with her dog. I had stepped off the main part of the trail to rest my legs, rub the sweat out of my eyes and suck down some much-needed air—this was the steepest part of the climb, I might add—while her breathing was barely labored. As someone who exercises every day and can run on flat surfaces somewhat competently, I was as impressed with this stranger as I was humbled by her superior athleticism.

She passed me again on her way down as I was nearing the summit. Since I was doubled over at the time, staring at the ground in an attempt to catch my breath, I happened to notice her running shoes. The Brooks logo caught my eye, along with one word: Cascadia. Guided by the vague hope that I could turn into a person who runs up mountains, I Googled the sneakers as soon as I got home. Even though I’ve since come to terms with the fact that shoes aren’t a magical panacea, my research yielded one nugget of information: The Brooks Cascadia 18 Trail Running Shoes are marked down to their lowest price in 30 days at Amazon.

If you’re not aching to jog up a steep incline anytime soon, it’s important to note that plenty of shoppers use these shoes for hiking. One reviewer who has hiked the Grand Canyon three times and hikes other smaller trails on a weekly basis, dubbed the Cascadias their “favorite hiking shoes.” They buy a new pair every year because they love them so much. A second commented that the shoes have “great traction” and “the best” grip. And, of course, some use them to run. A third shopper needed a trail shoe that felt similar to their Brooks Adrenalines and Ghosts, so they got the Cascadia. After 20 miles of running, their feet still felt “amazing.”

All of this praise makes sense. In addition to all-terrain outsoles that allow for traction in wet and dry conditions, the shoes are also breathable, lightweight and supportive. Such qualities are important in good conditions, but are even more crucial when running over rocky, uneven ground.

Now that these Brooks shoes are marked down by $40, I might even buy a pair for myself. Maybe they’ll turn me into the person jogging past the winded hiker on the side of the trail. Then again, maybe not.
