Further industrial action by NHS doctors could be on the horizon after foundation year 1 (FY1) doctors voted overwhelmingly to take strike action.
The BMA announced on 6 October that a vast majority (97%, 3950 of 4057) of FY1 resident doctors who voted in its ballot of eligible members had backed strike action over a shortage of specialty training places that is leaving many unemployed.
The ballot had a 65% (4057 of 6243) turnout among FY1 resident doctors who are BMA members, which the union said gave it a mandate for industrial action alongside the linked dispute over eroded pay.
