For as long as I’ve been alive, Bobby Flay has been on my TV screen. His years of experience show in everything he does. The older I get, the more I recognize how he wins almost every episode of “Beat Bobby Flay.” His technique and flavor profiles are so advanced, and I expect nothing less from his personal kitchen setup. He recently confirmed it in an Architectural Digest tour of his New York City apartment. Dishes with salt and spices dot the left side of his stove, a worn copper pot sits upright, ready for service and all of the…
Newswise — About a dozen studies in the past five years have made claims linking nearly every type of human cancer with the presence of microbiomes, “communities” of bacteria, viruses and fungi that live in or on peoples’ bodies. Now, scientists at Johns Hopkins Medicine say a study that sequenced human cancers found far less microbial DNA sequences than earlier studies reported in the same cancer tissue samples.“It’s the nature of science to validate, confirm and reproduce findings,” says Steven Salzberg, Ph.D., Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Biostatistics at The Johns Hopkins University. “Over time, we…

Family, friends and colleagues recently gathered just outside of McGuffin’s Venice Beach home in his lush urban garden to celebrate the life of the “Herb Hero” and NutraChampion, who passed away on Feb. 17. The tribute also provided a stage for AHPA President & CEO Graham Rigby to announce the Michael McGuffin Endowment Fund, which AHPA described as “a living tribute to Michael’s vision, leadership and passion for the herbal community.”Graham said the fund is one of the many ways AHPA can continue tending to McGuffin’s “garden,” ensuring that the seeds he planted for a thriving herbal products industry will…
High-protein snacks like strained (Greek-style) yogurt help you stay full between meals.Protein supports metabolism by preserving muscle and boosting calorie burn.Choose yogurt low in sugar and saturated fat, and add fiber-rich fruit or nuts. A new study has discovered that photorespiration, long thought to be a wasteful process, is key to producing folates. It suggests that scientists could help engineer plants that produce more nutrients while raising awareness of rising CO2 levels, which make plants less nutritious. Michigan State University, US, researchers explain that photorespiration involves the conversion of carbon into these nutrients that are essential to prevent birth defects. The study found that around 6% of carbon absorbed by plants is used to make the prenatal vitamins. However, when photorespiration is hindered, the production of vitamin B9 drops fivefold.“In cultures where the bulk of…
September is now underway and we have just a couple weeks left until the fall equinox—but not without a full moon first! This time around, the full moon will be in the sign of Pisces, and it will reach its peak on Sunday, September 7, at 2:09 p.m. EDT.
Have you been told to eat more fruit? There’s a good reason for that. “Whole fruits are a key recommendation for all healthy, balanced diets,” says Christopher Gardner, PhD , the director of nutrition studies at the Stanford University Prevention Research Center in California. Fruit contains several vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates , fiber, and antioxidants needed for overall health. Still, it’s possible to get too much of a good thing. Too much fruit can cause uncomfortable side effects. And, in some cases, may be risky for people with certain chronic conditions. Here’s how much you need, what’s considered too much, and…
In recent years, the intricate relationship between the human microbiome and cancer development has emerged as a focal point of biomedical research, shedding light on hidden factors influencing tumorigenesis. A groundbreaking study published in Medical Oncology by Jamal, Kamal, Alqurashi, and colleagues offers compelling evidence implicating the microbiome–cancer axis as a pivotal contributor to early-onset tumors. This paradigm-shifting insight challenges conventional views of cancer initiation and progression, suggesting that microbial communities residing within us play a far more dynamic role in oncogenesis than previously appreciated. Cancer’s genesis has long been attributed to genetic mutations and environmental triggers, yet the complexity…
