Kensing’s Sunvasterol upcycled plant sterol has gained novel food authorization from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The ingredient with natural sunflower-sourced phytosterols can benefit from EFSA-approved claims for plant sterols’ heart health benefits. Kensing will showcase Sunvasterol at the upcoming Food ingredients Europe (FiE) trade show in Paris, France (Dec 2–4). The new EFSA approval grants Kensing commercial exclusivity for Sunvasterol in Europe. Other producers wanting to enter the EU with the same type of sunflower sterol would have to file their own documentation through EFSA or obtain consent from the company. “We are very excited to receive this approval,…
Cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of Americans every year. Some lifestyle habits can help reduce your risk.No single food or diet prevents cancer; your overall eating pattern is the most important. Improving access to vaccines in Africa will require a manufacturing ecosystem able to supply jabs to multiple countries, according to new analysis, which suggests national-level efforts may impede capacity building. The study, published in Discover Medicine, identified cross-border and public-private collaboration as the keys to building vaccine capacity in Africa, says lead author, Vetja Haakuria, PhD, from the University of Rwanda. “There is a need for a clear understanding of the architecture of the vaccine manufacturing ecosystem, and for this to guide the capacity building efforts. Most African countries have a small population size, which makes end-to-end vaccine manufacturing for…

Credit: GSO Images / The Image Bank / Getty Images Researchers at Mayo Clinic have developed a new predictive tool that can estimate an individual’s risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an early stage of memory loss that can often evolve into Alzheimer’s disease, years before the first symptoms show up. With a long list of Alzheimer’s drugs failing in late-stage clinical trials over the past two decades, research is increasingly focusing on improving our understanding and ability to detect the early stages of the disease, including asymptomatic and MCI phases. Some of the brain changes that lead to…
MaterialsTMC, melamine and N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) were open and stored in a N2-environment glovebox. All other reagents, including acetone, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), TFA, deuterated TFA, polystyrene (280 kDa), anisole, chloroform, hexane, dimethyl formamide and DMSO were obtained from commercial vendors and used as received. CD-flat holey carbon (8/2-hole pattern) grids used for TEM were purchased from Electron Microscopy Sciences.Synthesis of 2DPA-1 powderFor a typical 2DPA-1 powder with a high r value, we first mix 1 mmol of TMC with 1 mmol of melamine in a 40-ml glass vial. Using a magnetic stir bar, stir the contents in a N2-environment glovebox with 18 ml of NMP…
