A new cross-sectional study shows that ultra-processed food consumption (UPFs) is negatively related to carbon footprint awareness and sustainable, healthy eating behaviors. It calls for stronger awareness of these factors to inform strategies targeting UPFs. The publication in BMC Public Health highlights the importance of tackling public health in tandem with nutrition and the environment. UPFs are adding significant health and environmental risks, the researchers warn. Until now, studies on UPFs have often overlooked the reasons that might motivate people to change their diets from unhealthy to sustainable and healthy eating. The researchers call for an integrated public health effort targeting nutritional and…
If developing drugs for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) were a poker game, you could say Novo Nordisk (NASDAQ Copenhagen: NOVO-B) saw a competitor’s bet and raised the stakes with its planned up-to-$5.2 billion acquisition of Akero Therapeutics (NASDAQ: AKRO). Akero, based in South San Francisco, CA, brings to Novo Nordisk a Phase III fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) analogue efruxifermin (EFX) that the Danish-based buyer has trumpeted as a potentially best-in-class treatment for MASH. EFX is now in Phase III studies for the treatment of moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (F2-F3) as well as for the treatment of cirrhosis (F4).…

The relationship between sounds in words and their meaning is thought to be mostly arbitrary. Some linguists and behavioural ecologists, however, argue that the instinctive vocal responses that humans and animals make — a cry or laugh, for instance — served as the foundation on which language evolved, as new meanings became associated with them. Feeney and colleagues explore learnt sound–meaning associations in birds (W. E. Feeney et al. Nature Ecol. Evol. https://doi.org/p78m; 2025). The rise of agentic AI tools caused Lei Zhu to rethink his role in bioinformatics.Credit: Lei ZhuWhen I began my graduate studies, the first thing I needed to do was choose a research direction. The laboratory I joined focused on two main areas: functional assays and bioinformatics. This was more than a decade ago, and the typical workflow involved bioinformatics researchers analysing large data sets to identify genes associated with specific phenotypes or diseases, which would then be handed over to the functional-assay team for validation. At the time, bioinformatics was a new, promising field, so I chose this path…
The last few decades have seen a dramatic rise in early-onset colorectal cancer, or cases that occur in adults under 50. A new study suggests that one symptom in particular may be the strongest predictor of colorectal cancer in this age group: rectal bleeding.[1]The research found that, among adults under 50 who underwent colonoscopy for any reason, those with rectal bleeding had an 850 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with early-onset colorectal cancer compared with people without this symptom.Researchers said that the findings underscore the importance of taking rectal bleeding seriously, even if you don’t have a family history…
Adrian O’Dowd1, Ella Hubbard21Kent2The BMJDiscontent between the GP profession and the government is becoming more evident as sparks fly over how reforms of online consultations are being implemented.New rules came into force on 1 October saying that all general practices in England must keep online consultation tools open from 8 am to 6 30 pm, Monday to Friday. The BMA warned that this could result in a surge of consultation requests with no additional workforce to deal with it, and as a result it has entered a formal dispute with the government.1The issue has now flared up again after national media…
