And what to look for in a supplement.
Clare Dyer, Gareth IacobucciThe BMJUK ministers are reportedly drawing up plans to change the law to make it easier to suspend doctors accused of misconduct from practising while they are under investigation.1The move has been prompted by the health secretary, Wes Streeting, being dissatisfied with the handling of the case of a British-Palestinian doctor, Rahmeh Aladwan, who is currently under investigation by the General Medical Council (GMC) over allegations of antisemitic remarks. Streeting is also reported to be planning to legislate for a new duty on NHS staff that would specifically prohibit them from making “racist” statements.2What sparked this?Aladwan, a…
Drinking enough water daily is essential for supporting your physical activity, aiding brain function, improving digestion and benefiting your skin. Even if you’re short on time, taking just five minutes a couple times a day to move your body can offer significant health benefits. New research shows these “exercise snacks” can improve heart and muscular fitness, particularly for people who are sedentary.[1]“What’s important here is how little exercise is needed to make a difference. It shows that even small, consistent efforts can trigger real physiological adaptations when done regularly,” says study author Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, a doctoral candidate and researcher at the University of Oviedo in Spain.“It helps reinforce the message that every move counts,” he adds.Quick, Intense Bursts of…

Spatial biology is propelling cancer research into a new era, offering unprecedented resolution into the tumor microenvironment, immune infiltration, and cellular heterogeneity at the single-cell level. While spatial technologies have advanced many areas of biology, cancer research has arguably benefited the most. In this episode of GEN Live, we explore how spatial technology is advancing the field of cancer research. What new questions can we now ask? What insights are emerging? And how might these technologies impact clinical care and patient outcomes?Joining us are leading researchers who are pushing the boundaries of cancer science using cutting-edge spatial tools. They’ll share how…
The outgoing chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has urged the government not to exacerbate the ongoing unemployment crisis in the profession by imposing tax increases on GPs.In a speech1 at the college’s annual conference, Kamila Hawthorne also called for ministers to provide ringfenced funding to allow general practices to employ the growing number of doctors who are completing their GP training.Last month it was reported that Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves was considering plans to levy national insurance on partnerships including general practices to try to raise almost £2bn a year for the Treasury.2Hawthorne warned…
Researchers and physicians alike are interested in identifying biomarkers from minimally invasive samples like blood to aid in disease detection and monitoring. However, so far, most targets observed at the bench don’t translate to clinical success.According to Mathias Uhlén, a protein scientist at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, part of this problem lies in the approach many researchers take to finding these biomarkers, comparing a single disease against healthy controls. In this model, it’s impossible to tell whether a particular protein is specific to the disease or may actually be common in several diseases.Mathias Uhlén directs the Human Protein…

Scientists can search the archives and trace biological contexts in big data.Credit: Andrew Brookes/Connect Images/Science Photo LibraryResearchers have launched a search engine that can quickly sift through the staggering volumes of biological data housed in public repositories. The team integrated data from seven publicly funded data archives, creating 18.8 million unique DNA and RNA sequence sets and 210 billion amino-acid sequence sets that…
Eight out of 18 inspected had significantly higher amounts of melatonin, while three had significantly less than the amount labeled. Most of these melatonin products came from US brands. One product contained no melatonin in any of the 10 units tested, when the label stated an amount of 10mg. The 18 imported products were intercepted at the Australian border between January and September this year on suspicion that they were substandard or falsified. The TGA tested these products by measuring the actual average content of melatonin as compared to the labeled amount, and the variation in the content across individual…
