Cachexia is a complex and multi-organ syndrome that is associated with cancer and affects quality of life. It is characterized by progressive and often severe weight loss, mainly due to the loss of skeletal muscle and, often, fat tissue. Unlike the weight loss that arises from starvation, cachexia cannot be fully reversed by nutritional interventions, and the condition is often accompanied by inflammation, metabolic dysregulation and reduced physical capabilities1. Writing in Nature, Bhatt et al.2 report identifying RNA-expression patterns associated with cachexia in skeletal muscle, which might lead to new treatment targets. Competing Interests M.J-.H. has received funding from CRUK,…
“Virgo is attracted to Sag’s fiery, bright expansiveness,” she says, noting that Sagittarius will appreciate feeling seen and loved by dependable Virgo. Plus, she notes, both of these signs are one for humor and will enjoy a connection with a lot of banter, back and forth, and laughter. “When you look at the signs of some of the greatest comedians of all time, a lot of them are Virgo and Sagittarius, so you’ve got a couple of clowns here,” Roby Antila adds.
What are protein bars?Big business, that’s what. The global market is worth billions and UK shelves are stacked high. They’ve hit the headlines after fitness influencer Joe Wicks and ultra-processed food warrior Chris van Tulleken cooked up a deliberately unhealthy protein bar—“Killer”—to expose the “health halo” that surrounds them. While being marketed as fitness fuel, most bars are in fact ultra-processed confections packed with sugar, fat, salt, and additives best kept out of your gym bag.Isn’t this a bit over the top?Not really. …
Researchers employed by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Berlin, Germany, assessed the use of DS, motivations, information behavior, perceptions, and intentions of continued use in 1,071 participants. The use of DS was high, with 76.9% of participants reporting usage, with motivations for use extremely varied. As well as the high percentage of use among participants, results indicated minerals were the most commonly used supplements, followed by vitamins. Magnesium was the top individual DS, used by over half of participants, while vitamins D, B12, and C, along with minerals like zinc, calcium, and iron, were also common.“These results also…
Nearly a year after expanding from single cell omics solutions into spatial biology, Takara Bio USA has launched a series of updates to its product portfolio designed to bring its new class of spatial technology to more researchers. Takara Bio USA has expanded its instrument-free Trekker™ Single-Cell Spatial Mapping Kits for compatibility with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples. By making its Trekker kits compatible with the commonly used archival sample type, Takara aims to broaden use of its technology by making spatial single-cell analysis more accessible to a wider variety of researchers. Andrew Farmer, PhD, chief scientific officer of Takara Bio…
Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi share the 2025 chemistry Nobel.Credit: Jonathan Nackstrand/AFP via GettyThree scientists who developed a class of extremely porous materials known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have won this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Susumu Kitagawa at Kyoto University in Japan, Richard Robson at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Omar Yaghi at the University of California, Berkeley, will share the prize of 11-million Swedish kronor (US$1.2 million), for inventing a new form of molecular architecture. Because they have such a vast internal surface area, MOFs can store gases, act as catalysts and deliver drugs, among…
A new review and meta-analysis reveals that vitamin D2 supplements may lower vitamin D3 levels — an essential nutrient for bone and immune health — than non-supplement users. The publication in Nutrition Reviews suggests prioritizing vitamin D3 supplements for people, especially those with vitamin D deficiency. “The meta-analysis reported here is, to the knowledge of the authors, the first to quantify the effect of vitamin D2 supplementation on vitamin D3 concentrations,” reads the paper. The study is especially relevant for people in the UK, for instance, during winter, when natural sunlight synthesis is inadequate, say researchers from UK-based University of Surrey, John…
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to researchers who developed metal-organic frameworks, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced today (Oct 8). Chemists Susumu Kitagawa from Kyoto University, Richard Robson, from Melbourne University, and Omar Yaghi from the University of California, Berkeley, shared the prize.”Imagine that the tools of chemistry could be used to create entirely new materials with unheard of properties, said Heiner Linke, a solid state physicist at Lund University and Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. “This year’s laureates have done just that.”Kitagawa, Robson, and Yaghi synthesized materials containing metal ions and organic linkers to…
Here’s how to make sure you’re getting enough.
I don’t know about you, but now that it’s getting a little chillier, I’m starting to realize that my t-shirt and shorts combo isn’t really cutting it. I’m cold and damp; it’s beginning to rain in the Northeast, and I’m feeling a little too exposed. I don’t love spending hundreds of dollars on workout gear, so I’m turning to Lululemon’s hidden “We Made Too Much” section for price drops on high-quality activewear. I didn’t know this existed until a co-worker pointed it out to me some years ago, and now I am constantly pursuing the section. Now’s a great time…
