Pollution levels in Delhi have hit hazardous levels, prompting the Indian government to try cloud seeding as a radical approach to tackling the problem.Credit: Prakash Singh/Bloomberg via GettyAn ambitious attempt by the Indian government to combat Delhi’s hazardous air pollution by inducing artificial rain has failed to trigger any precipitation, prompting researchers to question why the experiment went ahead. The experiment was conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur on 28 October. Two aircraft flew over several areas of Delhi and released flares containing particles of silver iodide and sodium chloride into the atmosphere, with the goal…
Credit: wildpixel/GettyImages Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is one of the most lethal kidney cancers, typically arising in individuals with sickle-cell trait. The tumor progresses rapidly, resists standard therapies, and often claims lives within a year of diagnosis. Despite its aggressiveness, molecular data on RMC have been scarce due to its rarity. In a new study published in Cell Reports Medicine, led by Pavlos Msaouel, MD, PhD, researchers sought to define the genomic and transcriptomic features of RMC using tumor samples from 25 patients—representing the largest cohort ever analyzed. Through whole-exome and RNA sequencing, the team confirmed universal loss of SMARCB1, the hallmark…
Studies show medical students and residents often feel unprepared to counsel patients on nutrition, citing inadequate, outdated or impractical training. But all that might all change. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Education recently called for medical schools to implement comprehensive nutrition education for physicians. This initiative, part of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda, aims to address the high rates of diet-related chronic diseases by equipping future doctors with essential nutrition counseling skills. Getting more nutrition education to doctors is something the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) has been working towards since its…

Scientists have identified a biomarker for aging in dogs that reveals biological age or predicts future health issues, which may also apply to humans. They found that molecules, especially post-translationally modified amino acids (ptmAAs), change with age.The publication in Aging Cell examined 800 dog blood samples from the Dog Aging Project and found that aging altered 40% of molecules.“These molecules, known as metabolites, are basically the building blocks of life,” says senior author Daniel Promislow, a senior scientist and scientific advisor at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, US. “They serve as the raw materials for forming…
Chia Seed Pudding – 1 serving (2 tablespoons chia seeds, ½ cup milk, ½ cup fruit, e.g., strawberries) Overnight Oats – 1 serving (1/2 cup oats, ½ cup milk, ½ cup fruit, e.g., strawberries) Protein 9 g 9.5 g Omega-3s 5 g 0 g Fiber 12 g 6 g Protein When it comes to protein, chia seed pudding and overnight oats are closely matched. “Both usually offer around 9 to 10 grams of protein per serving,” says Hannah Van Ark, M.S., RD. However, the quality of that protein differs. Chia seeds contain sufficient amounts of all nine essential amino…
Victoria Shepherd, principal research fellow (nurse)Centre for Trials Research, Cardiff University, Cardiff, UKshepherdvl1{at}cardiff.ac.ukOlder people are systematically excluded from research, particularly clinical trials, despite having the highest health and care needs.1 The joint statement from research funders calls for a renewed commitment to ensuring better inclusion of older adults, particularly those with multiple long term health conditions.2But the statement doesn’t mention the growing number of older people with cognitive impairment who are often excluded altogether.3 This is primarily …

Welcome to Utheri Archaeological Park. Please stay out of the abandoned buildings. The deserted cityscape covering the entire lunar surface has many options for exploration, including sprawling stone parks and winding streets. You can even enter the unusually clean sewers beneath the ground; nothing biological has survived.Indoor exhibits: A breakdown of the remains of the virus that wiped out all life on the moon. You can use the holographic tools to explore the structure of the virus, how it interacted with biological materials, both living and not, and see how the dissolution of the atmosphere destroyed its ability to stay…
Llama 3 is a large language model owned by tech firm Meta.Credit: MauriceNorbert/AlamyArtificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are worse at retrieving accurate information and reasoning when trained on large amounts of low-quality content, particularly if the content is popular on social media1, finds a preprint posted on arXiv on 15 October. In data science, good-quality data need to meet certain criteria, such as being grammatically correct and understandable, says co-author Zhangyang Wang, who studies generative AI at the University of Texas at Austin. But these criteria fail to capture differences in content quality, he says. Wang and his colleagues wanted to see…
