Credit: Morsa Images/ DigitalVision/ Getty Images Researchers at McGill University, Canada, have built the smallest 3D bioprinter to date. With a nozzle just 2.7 mm in diameter, the device is designed to help surgeons reconstruct tissues removed from the vocal cords in real time during surgery. A study published today in the journal Device reports that the 3D printer was able to accurately repair lesions in surgical models of vocal cords used to train surgeons. “Our device is designed not only for accuracy and printing quality but also for surgeon usability,” says Swen Groen, PhD student at McGill University and…
Shingles is a painful condition caused by the herpes zoster virus. About 1 million people in the United States get shingles every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), so it’s important to know how to treat the condition and what to avoid if you get shingles. If you had chicken pox, you’re susceptible to shingles, and your risk increases as you get older. While antiviral drugs may mitigate your symptoms while you have shingles, your diet is important, too. Wondering what not to eat with shingles? Foods to avoid with shingles include low-nutrient foods and those…
Company aims to make all measurements, protocols and therapies in Johnson’s longevity regimen ‘easy and accessible’ for others. Seasoned investors including Naval Ravikant, Balaji Srinivasan and the Winklevoss brothers joined the likes of Kim Kardashian, Logan Paul and Paris Hilton, as an eclectic mix of some 50 individuals joined forces to back the company’s personalized approach to longevity. Created by tech entrepreneur-turned-biohacker Bryan Johnson, Blueprint emerged from Johnson’s own highly regimented health protocol developed over several years with a team of scientists and doctors.…
Sylvain Martel at Polytechnique Montréal uses magnetic-resonance-imaging scanners to steer drug-loaded nanorobots in pigs.Credit: Dumitru LoghinThe live pig in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine was a common sight for Sylvain Martel, a nanorobotics researcher at Polytechnique Montréal in Canada, by the time he stepped into the imaging suite one evening in 2017. By then, Martel and his colleagues had spent more than a decade refining swarms of tiny robots that they could steer through the animals using the machine’s magnetism. The hope was that such nanorobots could one day be a delivery vehicle for cancer-busting drugs. That evening, the…
The room was the colour of bone. Emi sat on the synthetic tatami, its texture a sterile approximation of the real thing, and spoke towards the microphone that hung from the ceiling like a silver spider. A persistent cough — a familiar betrayer she failed to suppress — rattled her body.“Komorebi,” she whispered, the word a soft puff of air. “Sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees.”The microphone glowed a placid blue. A synthesized voice, neutral and calm, replied from a hidden speaker. “Acknowledged. Noun. A phenomenon of light and nature. Please provide a sentence for context.”Emi closed her eyes.…
The New York City-based brand, was one of the first to market as the creatine gummy category emerged to provide on-the-go convenience for an expanding audience of creatine consumers drawn by its potential to boost performance for mind and body well beyond its traditional muscle-building benefits.“The opportunity to me was the build the mass market creatine brand that was focused on approachability, form-factor innovation and science-backed results,” said Dan McCormick, co-founder and CEO of Create. “As both a long-time creatine user and someone who is chronically online, I could tell the creatine space was ripe for disruption and growth.”Create is…
Delivering advanced therapies to patients who need them requires an effective transition from lab-based cell therapy activity to manufacturing at scale. Robust, reproducible processes that can adapt to increasing demand is key to ensure success from early-stage research to commercial production. In this GEN webinar, Nik Ekman will discuss critical considerations for scaling cell therapy processes from research through commercialization. During the webinar, you will learn how designing flexible, closed, compliant workflows early drives efficiency, quality, and sterility assurance across cell therapy development. Some key takeaways from the webinar include:Key scaling considerations through each stage of the cell therapy development pipeline—from…

New research has found that components in cardamom seed extract show significant antiviral properties. The effects were tested on human lung cells, which revealed the extract activates certain sensors that produce cytokines, which are essential for viral infection defense. The publication in Foods found that the bioactive 1,8-cineole, in particular, enhances the production of type I interferons (cytokines) through intracellular nucleic acid sensors. Bioactive compounds can interfere with viruses at different stages of their life cycle to alter the body’s immune response to the infection, explain the researchers from Shinshu University, Japan.“Cardamom has historically been widely used as a spice with medicinal…
