My grandparents used to tell stories about the old days, when there was only one chain and everyone lived on it. How much better it all was, then. I don’t know if I believe the stories. How else did all the different languages start, all the religions? Where did cross-chain travel come from? But I like to remember their stories. Especially now.I was born on Stokeham, a legacy chain. Good uptime. Low latency. Stable. A bit boring, I guess. That’s what my sister always said. Vridia. She called Stokeham a Boomer Chain, using grandma-slang to show just how backwater we…
To accelerate the discovery of new antibiotics, microbiologist Cesar de la Fuente develops computational tools to look for (“encrypted”) antimicrobial peptides hiding in the genomes of a wide range of organisms.Image credit:©iStock, Ole_CNXIn the summer of 1928, Alexander Fleming, an English biologist, accidentally discovered that the mold Penicillium notatum inhibits bacterial growth. Fleming’s serendipitous finding brought penicillin—one of the first antibiotics—into the world. Now, nearly 100 years later, scientists still look to nature to find new antibiotics. They dig up soil and collect water, trying to purify active compounds from these highly complex samples. This process takes many years—often longer than…
Credit: MedicalRF.com / Getty Images A gene expression assay designed to classify prostate cancer into distinct molecular subtypes can, for the first time, be used to identify which patients will respond to hormone therapy when they experience recurrence after radical prostatectomy. “We’ve been searching for decades for a way to determine which patients are most likely to respond to hormone therapy after prostatectomy,” said Daniel Spratt, MD, principal investigator of the trial and professor and chair of radiation oncology at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. “We now have a tool that lets…

AbstractObjective To characterise the use of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test in primary care in England.Design Population based open cohort study.Participants 10 235 805 male patients older than 18 years and registered at 1442 general practices that contributed to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink between 2000 and 2018. Data were linked to the National Cancer Registry, Hospital Episode Statistics, and Office for National Statistics.Main outcome measures Population based temporal trends and annual percentage changes were analysed using age standardised PSA testing rates. Mixed effects negative binomial regression models investigated individual patient rate ratios of PSA testing. Linear mixed effects models examined…
“The best time to try cognitive shuffling is when your mind won’t stop racing, especially when you’re lying in bed awake for more than 15 to 20 minutes, or if you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep,” says Dr. Kaylor. In fact, cognitive shuffling can even be beneficial in a non-sleep context, adds Sultan. It may help alleviate intrusive thoughts during moments of high stress, such as after a grueling day at work or during a stressful event.By incorporating cognitive shuffling into moments when you’re prone to dwelling on negative thoughts and experiences, such…
Cellular membrane proteins play important roles in cellular transport, signaling, and cell-to-cell communication. Malfunction in membrane proteins can lead to serious diseases, such as cancer. However, current biophysical models poorly describe the behaviors and energetics of proteins within lipid bilayers, limiting the understanding of disease-related misfolding and mechanisms for therapeutic intervention. In a new study published in PNAS titled “Design principles of the common Gly-X6-Gly membrane protein building block,“ researchers from Scripps Research have unveiled a protein design approach for decoding the sequence–structure relationships underlying transmembrane α-helix packing. The findings offer computational strategies to interpret and manipulate membrane protein folding…
Credit: enot-poloskun/Getty Images For years, scientists have tried to harness bacteria’s ability to infiltrate tumors, but safety and control have remained obstacles. Now, a study published in Oncotarget demonstrates that an engineered strain of Salmonella Typhimurium, called ACTM-838, can safely deliver immune-activating payloads directly to solid tumors and trigger a durable anti-tumor response. The work, led by Kyle R. Cron, PhD, and Akshata R. Udyavar, PhD, at Actym Therapeutics, builds on decades of research in bacterial immunotherapy but pushes it into a new era of precision design. “ACTM-838 showed durable anti-tumor efficacy in multiple murine models and synergized strongly with anti-PD1 therapy,” the authors write. Turning tumors…
