In the intricate world of biology, a groundbreaking revelation is reshaping our understanding of trees—not as solitary giants, but as bustling metropolises of microbial life. Scientists have uncovered that each tree harbors its own microbiome, a vast invisible ecosystem comprising trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes. This discovery, detailed in a recent study, parallels the human gut microbiome but extends deep into the wood itself, challenging long-held assumptions about plant life. Researchers from Yale University, leading this exploration, analyzed samples from various tree species and found that a single tree can host up to a trillion microbial cells. These…

The biotech start-up, which was founded in 2019 and is based in Navarra in the north of Spain, is focused on developing and commercializing probiotics and postbiotics for obesity and its associated complications such as insulin resistance, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. In just six years, the company has used its validated development platform to substantiate the anti-diabetes potential of its Pediococcus acidilactici strain through studies in Caenorhabditis elegans and rodents to humans. Its pA1c strain has been studied in both its live (probiotic) and heat inactivated (postbiotic) forms, with the most recently published papers focusing on the postbiotic, which…

New research finds evidence of a previously unknown three-way relationship between human genetics, the gut mycobiome, and the risks of developing chronic diseases. Nutrition Insight speaks to a study author to learn how the finding opens the door to exploring the fungal biosphere, as the mycobiota is an often-overlooked part of the gut microbiome. The Pennsylvania State University, US, researchers note that physicians’ lack of knowledge about what contributes to disease risks limits their ability to treat chronic diseases. They point to the gut fungi as drivers of intestinal diseases. Previously, scientists thought gut fungi were determined by diet.To determine…
