Sabrina Carpenter shared her mom’s 7-ingredient cheesy dip recipe in a new cooking video. She also revealed her “go-go juice” cocktail with tequila or vodka, pineapple juice, ginger ale and lime. The dip is quick, no-bake and perfect with chips or veggies—easy to prep ahead for guests. Sabrina Carpenter is a woman of many talents, from being a Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter to stints as a Broadway actor and film star. Carpenter admits that her talents are more limited in the kitchen, but she’s still game to whip up some family recipes and go-to beverages in a new video. Let’s just say we…
Universities must do more to prepare engineering students to manufacture cell and gene therapies, according to new analysis, which suggests few degree-level training courses cover the specialist skills required. The problem, says author Andy Tay, PhD, from the National University of Singapore, is that most programs still focus on large molecule drug production. “[Cell, tissue, and gene therapy products] (CTGTP) manufacturing differs from traditional biopharmaceutical production. In traditional manufacturing, the cells are used as hosts to produce the therapeutic antibodies etc., whereas in the CTGTP sector, we use the cells as the medicine. “Hence, the steps used to isolate and…
DNA-synthesis firms routinely use -biosecurity-screening software to ensure that they don’t inadvertently create dangerous sequences. But a paper published in Science on 2 October describes a potential vulnerability in this workflow1.It details how protein-design strategies aided by artificial intelligence (AI) could circumvent the screening software that many DNA-synthesis firms use to ensure that they avoid unintentionally producing sequences encoding harmful proteins or pathogens. The researchers used an approach from the cybersecurity world: ‘red teaming’, in which one team attempts to break through another’s defences (with their knowledge). They found that some screening tools were unprepared to catch AI-generated protein sequences that…
Fructose intolerance is a condition in which the body has difficulty digesting fructose, a natural sugar found in fruits, some vegetables, and added sweeteners such as high-fructose corn syrup . There are two main types of this condition: hereditary fructose intolerance, which is a rare genetic disorder, and fructose malabsorption, which is a more common digestive condition. While hereditary fructose intolerance is a lifelong disorder that requires strict dietary management, fructose malabsorption is a nongenetic condition that is often managed through dietary changes. Neither condition is curable, but both are treatable. Here’s everything you need to know about fructose intolerance…
Linking single cell functional insights with sequencing data provides unprecedented insight into the translational potential of cell therapies.Image credit:istock, ru3apr The growing understanding that most diseases are related to cellular dysfunction and dysregulation has researchers probing single cells to uncover the molecular mechanisms that contribute to disease and inform the development of novel therapeutics.Single-cell sequencing allows scientists to differentially categorize cells based on their gene expression. However, gaining insights into cell function by direct measurement, rather than inference, can be challenging. To enable this, scientists from Bruker Cellular Analysis developed a cutting-edge platform named Beacon Discovery™, a microfluidic chip-based technology that…

The OneBiome lab, inaugurated Sept. 29, is focused on developing targeted solutions by combining advanced mircobiology, AI and data science.its inauguration marks the start of an expanded research agenda to explore microbial interventions across the lifespan, with a particular focus on specific health conditions, such as allergies and obesity. “We know that the microbiome is a central regulator of overall health,” Rocio Martin, Danone’s vice president of life science innovation, told NutraIngredients. “However, we see some limitations of the knowledge of the microbiome today. “The knowledge we have built in the last few years has been quite descriptive. We know…
I spent 25 years working on a 24-hour rotating shift as a fire captain and EMT. It was the best job in the world—but it took a real toll on my sleep. I sometimes had to function on four to six hours of sleep during a 24- to 48-hour period, and getting back into a regular sleep routine between shifts always took time.
Black beans are the number one gut-healthy canned food to buy at Costco. They support digestive health, may improve your microbiome and are versatile in cooking. When choosing healthy canned foods, look for fiber, no- or low-sodium and no added sugar. There’s no denying the convenience of canned foods—and did you know certain ones are also great for your gut? Canned foods can be easy sources of prebiotics and fiber that promote a healthy microbiome and digestive system. Plus, some canned foods also contain antioxidants with proven benefits for keeping your gut happy and healthy. That said, not all canned…
The BMA has entered into formal dispute with the government over new online consultation rules, amid warnings that the volume of requests being received by practices is unsustainable, unsafe, and reduces the availability of face-to-face appointments. The doctors’ union said it had been forced into the move after warning Health Secretary Wes Streeting that the new system, which allows patients to make unlimited online consultation requests, would threaten patient safety without additional workforce or safeguards.1As of 1 October all general practices in England are required to keep online consultation tools open from 8 am to 6.30 pm, Monday to Friday.2 The…
