Julie Andrews’ carrot cake recipe replaces butter with protein-rich tofu in the frosting. The orange-zested tofu frosting pairs with toasted coconut for a flavorful, creamy finish.Using tofu cuts fat and adds up to 35g of protein to the cake, or almost 4g per slice. The United Service Organizations (USO) has been helping people serving in the military and their families since 1941. You might know the USO for its history of providing celebrity entertainment for troops serving overseas. But the organization also tapped some of their favorite entertainers to contribute to The USO’s Celebrity Cookbook, a 1992 collection of 200 recipes…
Credit: selvanegra/Getty Images Researchers at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, and the Italian Institute of Technology have developed a fiber-optic technique to detect amyloid plaques in the brains of freely moving mice. The new technique, published in Neurophotonics, uses the fluorescent dye Methoxy-X04, which binds specifically to amyloid fibrils and can cross the blood-brain barrier, allows researchers to track the presence and distribution of plaques in the brains of mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. The team’s findings demonstrated that fiber photometry, which today is typically used to measure neural activity, can be adapted to detect molecular pathology in Alzheimer’s mouse…
Broderick’s recipe calls for puréeing the soup after adding tortillas for extra creaminess. His tortilla soup blends blackened tomatoes, jalapeño, spices and corn tortillas. The soup can be made vegetarian by using veggie stock and skipping chicken or sour cream. Nature, Published online: 30 September 2025; doi:10.1038/d41586-025-02977-xScientists try to explain bird behaviour, and a book delves into scientific paradoxes.
Published in Frontiers in Nutrition, the paper highlighted widespread insufficiencies for numerous micronutrients including vitamins A, D and B12, as well as folate, iron, calcium, iodine, magnesium and zinc. However, the authors from the Council for Responsible Nutrition, Nestlé, Amway and Bayer said that these nutritional gaps were under-recognized in public health policy and that dietary supplements were an underutilized tool when it comes to filling these gaps. “The main takeaway from our review is that micronutrient inadequacy is surprisingly common across Europe, even in high-income countries with well-stocked supermarket shelves,” co-author Kostas Mantantzis, global medical business lead at Bayer, told…
In a new study published in Nature Communications titled, “COOKIE-Pro: Covalent Inhibitor Binding Kinetics 2 Profiling on the Proteome Scale,” researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have developed a new data analysis method that provides a comprehensive, unbiased view of how covalent inhibitors interact with proteins throughout the cell. The technique aims to accelerate the design of more effective and safer therapeutics by precisely measuring both the binding strength and reaction speed of these drugs against thousands of potential targets simultaneously. “Covalent inhibitors, which include well-known drugs like aspirin and the cancer therapeutic ibrutinib, are highly effective because they form…
Investments in neurodegeneration-focused startups set to continue as Sanofi Ventures gets significant cash infusion. Pharma giant Sanofi has revealed it is providing an additional $625 million to Sanofi Ventures, its corporate venture capital arm, with the funds earmarked for investments in early stage biotech and digital health. The multiyear capital infusion raises the evergreen fund’s assets under management to more than $1.4 billion, extending a decade-long strategy of identifying and nurturing early-stage companies in areas aligned with the French drugmaker’s long-term priorities. The additional capital for its investment arm comes as the biotech sector faces constrained access to early funding,…
Y Tony Yang, endowed professor and associate deanGeorge Washington University, Washington, DC, USAytyang{at}gwu.eduKirkland and Greer’s article about Robert F Kennedy Jr and others in the antivaccine movement offers a timely and urgent critique of current US vaccine policy leadership and its global ripple effects.1 The article rightly highlights the dangers of politicising vaccine science and the erosion of expert driven policy, but I think the discussion would benefit from a broader, more nuanced perspective on …
A new study finds that it is not too late for older adults to improve their health and well-being through lifestyle interventions.Researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada, found that almost 25% of adults over 60 with poor well-being were able to improve within three years. The publication in PLOS One underlines the importance of lifestyle and psychosocial factors in healthy aging. Those with poor well-being reported pain, health issues, low mood, or isolation. People with strong psychological wellness at the start of the study were noted to be five times more likely to achieve ideal health. The study notes that healthy…
To gain a complete picture of cell development, scientists recently filmed cells in the live skin tissue of frog embryos. They quantified changes in cell shape and movement and analyzed how these changes defined cell fate. Image credit:Raghavan ThiagarajanWhat do cells want to be when they grow up, and how do they get there? Intrigued by these questions, many developmental biologists try to follow the journeys of cells from when they can virtually become any kind of cell to when they have reached their final fate. Scientists can take snapshots of this journey at specific timepoints, but what happens between these…
