The active nutrition market is expanding to include regular consumers and athletes. With more environmentally conscious consumers demanding high-quality, efficacy, and convenient supplement formats, manufacturers are developing solutions to meet these demands. Nutrition Insight explores how industry is developing next-gen, sustainable, plant-based active nutrition with Bioiberica, Cosun Protein, Gnosis by Lesaffre, HTBA, Lactalis Ingredients, Sensus, and Sirio Europe.Previously, with these companies, as well as Balchem Human Nutrition and Health and FrieslandCampina Ingredients, we investigated how fibers, vitamins, minerals, and mobility-supporting ingredients are increasingly important in active nutrition consumer demands, next to trending protein. The specialists also explained how scientific studies…
Over the past few decades, researchers studying the gut microbiome have noted associations between gut microbes and neurological conditions from depression and Parkinson’s disease to autism spectrum disorders.1 With bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain via the vagus nerve, the potential role of the gut microbiome in autism spurred numerous investigations from human observational and mechanistic mouse studies to interventional clinical trials. However, in a Perspective paper published today in Neuron, scientists argue that research on the connection between the gut microbiome and autism has methodological, conceptual, and statistical flaws.2 The authors of the article, led by Kevin Mitchell,…
Hospital leaders’ requests to exempt resident doctors from striking will not be granted if trusts do not properly “incentivise” non-striking doctors to provide cover or if non-emergency work is continuing, the BMA has warned. This comes after NHS England said that it expected hospitals to still provide 95% of all elective work during the upcoming five day strike. But BMA leaders said that resident doctors would not be “bullied or coerced” into staying at work as hospitals attempted to meet this difficult target.Resident doctors in England are due to undertake five days of industrial action over pay and unemployment from 7…
Be the first to rate & review! This Melting Spanakopita Cabbage recipe transforms cabbage into something memorable. As it cooks, the cabbage becomes meltingly tender, its golden edges absorbing a tangy, herb-filled sauce of feta, cream cheese and dill—capturing the essence of spanakopita in one skillet. The result is a creamy and comforting twist on classic Greek-inspired flavors. Serve with crusty whole-grain bread to sop up any leftover sauce. Published on November 13, 2025
A Tiny Reasoning Model beat Large Language Models in solving logic puzzles, despite being trained on a much smaller dataset. Credit: GettyA small-scale artificial-intelligence model that learns from only a limited pool of data is exciting researchers for its potential to boost reasoning abilities. The model, known as Tiny Recursive Model (TRM), outperformed some of the world’s best large language models (LLMs) at the Abstract and Reasoning Corpus for Artificial General Intelligence (ARC-AGI), a test involving visual logic puzzles that is designed to flummox most machines. The model — detailed in a preprint on the arXiv server last month1 — is…
Cottage cheese is a nutrient-packed, versatile ingredient that can be enjoyed in many dishes.Look for options with at least 12 grams of protein per serving, no more than 300 mg sodium and a fat content that suits your needs.Enjoy it on toast, mixed with eggs or on its own for a delicious, protein-rich snack. Back in the ‘90s, my mom served cottage cheese with just about everything—even meatloaf. If you know, you know. For years, this humble dairy product didn’t exactly have the best reputation and was often dismissed as a boring, lumpy side. But thanks to a resurgence on…
China has seen increasing international enrolments as its universities grow in stature, but this has also brought challenges.Credit: Yang Bo/China News Service/VCG via GettyIn 2018, I argued that China’s meteoric growth in research output masked deeper structural issues, including inconsistent research quality and a ‘publish or perish’ academic culture. Seven years on, that picture has changed. Research quality in China has improved: in 2023, it overtook the United States as the leading country in the Nature Index, which tracks output in high-quality natural- and health-sciences journals. Since then, the gap between the two countries has only widened. These gains reflect…
Side Effects of Eating Raw OystersRaw oysters offer big health benefits, serving as an excellent source of protein, Vitamin B-12, copper, zinc, and selenium. However, they also cause thousands of people to get sick each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).As filter feeders, these bivalve mollusks consume about 25 gallons of water a day. While oysters support a healthy coastline and help keep the water clean, they can also harbor pathogens that can make you sick.Eating raw or undercooked oysters can put you at risk for an infection called vibriosis, which is caused by various strains…
Researchers compared the transcriptomes of gymnosperms like Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn redwood), some angiosperms, and ferns to better understand the genetic drivers that promoted seed evolution in plants.Image credit:Veronica Sondervan, NYU & NYBGMore than 300 million years ago, when dinosaurs walked the earth, gymnosperms evolved as the first seed-bearing plants and transformed life on the planet.1 Today, people rely heavily on seeds for food, fuel, medicines, and more. Despite this, scientists do not completely understand the genes that drove the evolution of seeds. Now, scientists from the New York Botanical Garden (NYGB) and other research institutes analyzed the transcriptomes of 20 plant species…
Over the timeframe analyzed, the overall use of any dietary supplement increased from 51.8% in 2011-2012 to 61.4% in 2021-2023. In addition, 16.2% of respondents were taking four or more supplement products concurrently, compared to 10% in 2011-2012.Further analysis showed that multivitamin or multimineral (MVMM) use stayed consistent across the study periods, remaining just above the 30% figure, whereas any vitamin use or any mineral both increased substantially, by 7.6% and 9.7%, respectively. The most popular vitamins and minerals, including through the use of MVMM, were vitamin D (48.2%), calcium (44.3%) and vitamin C (41.2%). When MVMM use was taken out…
