OpenAI founder’s Merge Labs startup seeks to develop ‘less invasive’ options for brain-computer interface technology. A significant new player appears set to emerge in the increasingly competitive landscape of brain–computer interfaces. OpenAI founder Sam Altman is reportedly behind a new venture called Merge Labs, which it appears will be in direct competition with the likes of Elon Musk’s BCI company Neuralink. According to a report in the Financial Times, Merge Labs is in the midst of gathering funding, likely making it one of the most highly valued startups in the emerging BCI sector, alongside $9 billion-valued Neuralink, and a host…
The systematic review and meta-analysis from authors in Italy assessed the effect of ACV on anthropometric measurements in adults, in light of a growing trend of taking ACV shots to support weight control. The researchers noted that some ACV studies have historically faced high risks of bias and low-quality influences, including publication bias, heterogeneity and small sample sizes. However, even after excluding these factors, they found that ACV may still improve weight and BMI.“ACV may represent a valuable nutritional intervention for managing obesity, particularly when combined with appropriate lifestyle modifications,” the researchers wrote.Benefits of apple cider vinegarACV continues to grow in…

There are obvious cholesterol-raising culprits like butter, fried foods and ice cream. Some foods, like unfiltered coffee and ghee, have similar effects but are a little less obvious.Limiting these foods, along with other healthy habits can help you manage your cholesterol levels. I was hiking in Colorado recently when a woman ran past me with her dog. I had stepped off the main part of the trail to rest my legs, rub the sweat out of my eyes and suck down some much-needed air—this was the steepest part of the climb, I might add—while her breathing was barely labored. As someone who exercises every day and can run on flat surfaces somewhat competently, I was as impressed with this stranger as I was humbled by her superior athleticism. She passed me again on her way down as I was nearing the summit.…
“Before I went into wood science, I worked with steel and aluminium components in the automotive industry. But metals are boring compared with living materials. Wood has character; no two logs are alike.I work with computed tomography (CT) scanning to study the mechanical properties of wood so that we can locate regions of high quality material and use each tree to its full potential. Sawmills that can afford CT scanners usually check logs to avoid certain knot patterns, but my goal is to be able to predict the features of timber beyond just the knots. In our laboratory in Skellefteå, Sweden,…
Enter anthocyanins: the vibrant plant pigments responsible for the deep blues, purples, and reds in many fruits and vegetables. Gestational diabetes can have long-term effects on women’s health. Credit: Yui Mok/PA Images via AlamyLast week, a study involving more than nine million pregnancies reported that children whose mothers had gestational diabetes during pregnancy had a higher chance of developing attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism than did children whose mothers didn’t have the condition. The study, presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Vienna, is under review at a peer-reviewed journal. It is not the first to link gestational diabetes to neurodevelopmental disorders in children, but it is one of the largest. Researchers pooled results from…
