Nonstick pans are convenient and affordable, but they aren’t suited for every cooking task.Avoid using nonstick pans for sauces, high-heat cooking or for storing food, as this can reduce their effectiveness. To preserve the nonstick coating, always wash the pan by hand, avoid using metal utensils and store it properly. Nonstick pans are kitchen staples for good reason. Their nonstick coating makes them easy to clean and is perfect for delicate foods—like eggs and pancakes—that can easily stick to a traditional pan. They’re also generally more affordable than other pans, making them a favorite for both beginner home cooks and seasoned…
New research from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre has found that genes play an active role in shaping the bacteria found in our gut, questioning the idea that gut health is influenced only by diet. The gut microbiome is increasingly seen as vital to overall health, with Australia’s gut health supplement industry valued at over $400 million in 2024. After decades of research linking the gut microbiome to almost every chronic disease, it may seem like we’re all being held hostage by the bugs that live inside us. While gut microbes certainly influence everything from diabetes to depression, this study…

Cancer immunotherapy has historically focused on harnessing the ability of T cells to recognize and attack cancer cells. Adaptive immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) unleash tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) to fight cancer, offering cures to patients who have exhausted other treatment options. While tumors have a variety of strategies to develop ICI resistance, one of the key mechanisms is suppressing the recruitment of TILs. Turning immunologically “cold” tumors “hot” by activating innate immune recognition of cancer cells and recruiting TILs has been a longstanding goal of the immuno-oncology field. In a new study published in Cell Reports Medicine titled “ENPP1 inhibitor with…
You might know that anaphylaxis — a severe allergic reaction — can occur in response to triggers such as nuts, insect bites, and certain medications. But physical activity can also induce anaphylaxis. Known as exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA), this rare condition affects about 0.05 percent of people at some point in life. But EIA is serious and potentially life threatening, so it’s crucial to know how to recognize the symptoms and respond properly — and promptly.e60dc2a1-f33c-4a05-9b50-8e3e8e597629c74dd548-8a02-41e2-8942-7eb6eb122bc4 Keep reading to learn more about EIA, including how food can be involved in these reactions and how to exercise safely with the condition. AHA now recommends treatment for elevated blood pressure starting at 120–129/under 80 mmHg.High blood pressure (130/80+) remains a treatment threshold under the 2025 guidelines.Goal: reduce U.S. hypertension rates and risks of stroke, heart disease, and chronic conditions. Credit: Kateryna Kon/Science Photo Library/Getty Images HPV-DeepSeek, a liquid biopsy test combining whole genome sequencing and machine learning technology, has been reported to accurately identify head and neck cancers caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) up to 10 years before symptoms appear. Results published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showcase the potential of this test to enable earlier detection and treatment of a form of cancer that is often diagnosed years after onset. “Our study shows for the first time that we can accurately detect HPV-associated cancers in asymptomatic individuals many years before they are ever…

In a move that could reshape drug discovery, researchers at Harvard Medical School (HMS) have designed an artificial intelligence (AI) model they say is capable of identifying treatments that reverse disease states in cells. Unlike traditional approaches that typically test one protein target or drug at a time in hopes of identifying an effective treatment, the new model, called PDGrapher focuses on multiple drivers of disease and identifies the genes most likely to revert diseased cells back to healthy function. The tool also identifies the best single or combined targets for treatments that correct the disease process. The researchers say…
