As mRNA-based therapeutics move beyond early vaccine successes to encompass diverse modalities, the expectations for manufacturers to deliver products with consistent purity and quality are rising. To that end, traditional purification and quantitation processes will need to evolve to address current and new manufacturing challenges. Specifically, immunogenic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) byproducts are a major impurity complicating the purification of RNA-based vaccines and therapeutics consisting of mRNA, circRNA, or saRNA. In addition, current UV methods of nucleic acid quantitation require extra sample handling in the form of dilutions, which can lead to inaccuracies in measuring mRNA concentration. In this GEN webinar, Rice…

Credit: FatCamera/Getty Images Five key genes have been linked with aggressive or metastatic prostate cancer in men of African descent, according to the largest study to date in this population. Men carrying disease-causing variants in these predisposition genes were up to six times more likely to develop prostate cancer than others, with risk varying widely among the thousands of individuals studied. However, it could be more precisely gauged using information on germline pathogenic variants from predisposing genes, family history and a polygenic risk score. The research, in European Urology, suggests that stratified cancer screening programs could therefore help to identify…
The Connection Between Masturbation and UTIsThere are many known benefits of masturbating, like better sleep and lower stress, and doing it doesn’t increase your risk of getting a UTI on its own. But many of the actions that are part of sex and masturbation could contribute to UTIs by introducing bacteria that doesn’t belong into the urethra.“While masturbation itself does not increase the risk of UTIs, certain types of products associated with it, such as lubrication or toys, can,” says Dr. Grover. For example, she says that lubes can mess with the pH of the urogenital flora, the naturally occurring bacteria…
Galaxy M61 sports a long stellar stream, which had not been spotted before now.Credit: NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory/NOIRLab/SLAC/AURA/A. Romanowsky et. al.Mere months after its long-awaited debut, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is beginning to deliver on its promise to rewrite cosmic history. The observatory’s colossal camera — perched atop a mountain in Chile — has yet to begin its official scientific survey. But just by perusing its first test image, astronomers have uncovered a surprise: a trail of light — called a stellar stream — extending from a well-known galaxy, suggesting that the galaxy once tore apart a much…
This week’s dinner plan features recipes with at least 6 grams of fiber per serving to help you meet your nutrition goals. Eating enough fiber from foods like whole grains, vegetables and fruits helps support heart health, healthy digestion and more. Most Americans aren’t getting enough fiber, with only about 7% meeting their needs in their typical diets. But fiber is really important for a variety of body functions, including supporting heart health, aiding in healthy digestion and even lowering chronic disease…
uniQure’s “game changing” data announced in September, which showed significant slowing of Huntington’s disease (HD) progression in patients treated with its gene therapy candidate AMT-130, may not be enough to secure FDA approval. We also discuss Recursion’s pivotal leadership transitions, as Najat Khan, PhD, chief R&D officer and chief commercial officer, is set to take over as the company’s CEO effective January 1. The AI drug developer has made big bets filling the biology data gap and recently announced a “Google Map of the brain” to advance neurodegenerative disease targets. In open-source AI for drug discovery, the release of the…
