In 2011, a devastating earthquake struck the eastern part of Japan, triggering the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident and resulting in widespread radioactive contamination, including in agricultural fields. In the following years, Tatsuya Nobori worked in a plant physiology lab as a undergraduate and master’s student in Tomoko Nakanishi’s group at the University of Tokyo, where he focused on understanding how plants interacted with these radioactive substances. The lab’s work examined how rice—one of Japan’s staple crops—absorbed radioactive cesium, particularly Cesium-137, a major contaminant in the affected areas. Nobori was deeply involved in both laboratory work and fieldwork, conducting surveys…

It is not high in sugar and has a low glycemic index, making it an excellent choice for blood sugar control and for people managing diabetes. For most people, it is perfectly safe to eat every day as part of a varied, balanced diet. As a physician specializing in public health and…
There are plenty of ways to track your health, but these days most involve wearing a device. Kohler has a new approach: an app-connected camera for your toilet that analyzes your poop and urine. The Dekoda scanner attaches to your toilet bowl and scans the contents to reveal insights about gut health and hydration, funneling all the data into an app so you can track changes over time. The device is admittedly unusual, but gastroenterologists say there’s value in tracking your bowel habits over time. Whether you need a device to help you do it, though, is debatable. Here are the details…
A new study links long-term melatonin use to higher heart failure risk and death risk. The study is preliminary and doesn’t prove melatonin caused these heart-related outcomes. Most users weren’t affected, but nightly long-term use may warrant medical guidance. A large analysis presented by the American Heart Association found that adults with insomnia who took melatonin supplements for at least a year had higher rates of heart failure, hospitalizations and death compared to those who didn’t use them. The study…
